A sick society neglects pets
I'M sure I wasn't the only reader moved by the story of the dog in the pound at Renbury Farm at Bringelly (Leader, August 20).
Each year so many dogs and cats are euthanased because owners are too lazy or stingy to have them microchipped, don't want to pay to have their animals desexed or just don't care.
I find this abhorrent in this day and age. Shouldn't we all be more responsible and wise to the plight of all living things?
The ill treatment of animals, whether by neglect or direct action, is a societal ill and one that needs urgent attention.
Wake up people.

Good riddance to the Games
NON-SPORTS fans everywhere, rejoice!
The Olympic Games are finally over and now we might be able to actually read and hear about something other than sport and athletes (and what they are wearing, saying or doing at any given moment).
What a relief.

I can't understand why 24-hour trading is needed.
Why bring more stress on residents having to cope with the extra traffic etc that would be associated with it?

Just give usdecent parking
IN reference to Opinion (Leader, August 20) may I say that the writings of the Labor candidate titled "Not so fine" are in line with what is expected from the rantings of the Labor Party?
You know you are on a winner when it attracts meaningless comments from them.
My suggestion to use the revenue from the parking fines is sound and fair.
After all, the problem of the lack of parking was caused by 15 years of Labor neglect which finally led to the sacking of that Labor mob over the Oasis $30 million plus loss.
It would do well for the writer to demand from the mayoral candidate how she and the Labor Party are going to return to the people of Liverpool the $30 million plus that she managed to lose when she fully supported, in her free will, every aspect of the Oasis mess.
After all, she was in charge of the council's finances, was she not? We still await an apology for the waste of the money.
Where's the money Wendy?
It stands to any reasonable thinking person that if you build more car parking spaces there will be less revenue from the parking fines.
In time the revenue from the parking fines will dramatically decrease, unless of course the Labor councillors jack up the fines as they have done over the years.
My policy on the car parking problem is not to raise revenue but to provide what the people of Liverpool want and that is more affordable parking.
This is something that these politically useless Labor candidates will never understand.

Don't trivialise smoke's harm
I WISH to respond to the letter from R. Ross (Leader, August 20) trivialising the previous letter of Michael Snowden about smoking in alfresco areas.
I am quite incensed that R. Ross downplays the serious issue of carcinogenic side stream smoke by saying "be happy".
This man has no idea of the harm this issue does to the health of the community.
I'm sick to death of sitting waiting for a bus or train and someone nearby suddenly lights up and lets the breeze put all their putrid smoke over me.
Why can't we sit outside and have coffee or a meal without having to inhale these noxious fumes?
Smokers, in other words nicotine addicts, have had their way for too long.
They are a minority and it is a breach of our human rights when they selfishly puff away with no conscience about what their filthy habit is doing to others.
