MOUNTIES are shaping to be this season's premiership favourites, notching up its sixth straight win over Wentworthville on Sunday.
``If I'm not happy, there's something wrong with me,'' Mounties coach Steve Ghosn said after his team's 41-24 win in the Jim Beam Cup rugby league match at Mounties Sports Ground.
``We haven't had to play in the heat for a month or so and we dropped off in the second half but we got off at the end.''
Ghosn credited the round six victory on tight defence.
``Our attack's steadily improving but our defence is our backbone,'' he said.
Mounties' speedy winger Adam El-Zabeideh crossed the line early in the match to give his team a 6-0 lead.
Drew Dalton and Damien Mostyn exploited some lazy Wentworthville defence and put Mounties backrower Justin Coveney over the line.
Wentworthville fought back with a slashing try out wide to winger Simon Micallef which was converted, allowing them back into the game at 10-6.
But Mounties centre Wayne Dargan responded by bursting through a brick wall of defence to offload a pass to Anthony Dalton, who set up Dargan to score a well-deserved four points.
Hooker Anthony Farah took advantage of the lethargic Wentworthville defence to post four points as half time loomed.
With still enough time to devastate the opposition, Peter Lett claimed his first try of the season just before the first 40 minutes closed.
Going into half time 28-6, Wentworthville hit back in the second half with a 10th minute four-pointer but Mounties were not about to squander their lead.
Ben Weir, Lett and Inoke Amone nailed the win.
Mounties take on Cabramatta in the local derby at Mounties Sports Ground on Sunday at 2.30pm.
